Three daughters shake up the strict traditions of their religious Filipino American family when they all get knocked up out of wedlock at the same time.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

It's present-day 2013, and when newly divorced, middle-aged Mary Frances "Fran" finds out she's knocked up at her routine doctor's visit, her plans to share her news are derailed when her two younger unwed sisters, Mary Nicole "Ning," and Mary Juliana "Jules," also find out they're knocked up. Poised to her default position as "Ate" (big sis) and, therefore the emotional caretaker of all things crisis, Fran busts wide open the myth of this model minority Fil-Am family while keeping her "geriatric pregnancy" a secret from everyone.

ABOUT THE STORY

Adapted from the author's original award-winning TV pilot script, Proud Marys is a story about the tough choices women must make about their physical and mental health while navigating the toxic mixed messages from well-meaning Filipino American family members who work hard, play mahjong all night long, then go to church...usually in that order.

Career ambitions and high-functioning daughters clash with the traditions of their Filipino immigrant parents in this genre-bending seriocomedy. Youngest sister, accountant and former reality star Mary Juliana "Jules" surprise pregnancy stirs up the instability of her relationship with her influencer baby daddy, David.

Meanwhile, middle sister Medical resident Mary Nicole "Ning" faces the pressure of marriage vs. co-parenting with her workaholic on-again/off-again boyfriend Reuben, while she secretly considers the unthinkable.

As divorced and overworked eldest sister Fran grapples with whether she can carry her life-threatening pregnancy to term, her mental and physical health reaches a breaking point when she suffers an ectopic pregnancy.

Resentments flare when Fran confronts both Ning's unthinkable decision, as well as a long-held family secret, safeguarded by their Mama Joy.

FLEABAG meets a Fil-Am FIDDLER ON THE ROOF by way of JAGGED LITTLE PILL/SIX musical and the genre-bending concept of SOFT POWER (a play with a musical). Huh? What we are attempting to create is a genre-bending, "catalog musical” of sorts, by re-purposing some of our previously released and unreleased music, to serve the story.

The word of the year was Selfie.

The attitude of the year was Swag.

The fad of the year was a Onsie.

And the social media site of the year was Vine. We also had Barack Obama as President, and women had bodily autonomy. 

In essence, Proud Marys is a genre-bending seriocomedy that unapologetically tackles the nuanced conversations about family planning, high-risk pregnancies, miscarriage, adoption, and raising a modern family within the lens of a devoutly Catholic Fil-Am family, one pop song at a time.
